Are Your Pipes Winter Ready?

McCall Snowy Weather

Even though the leaves are just beginning to turn vibrant shades of yellow and orange, winter will soon be upon us in the West Central Mountains of Idaho. It will come quickly, and it will likely stay for a while. This picture was taken on a spring day in May this year. The length of our winters is the number one reason why it is so important to take the time to properly prepare your pipes (and whole home) for winter.

Here are the top five things you should do to prepare your pipes for winter:

1. Blow Out Your Sprinklers- Call your landscaper and make sure your sprinklers are properly blown out. Any water in the pipes will freeze and can cause expensive leaks you will have to deal with in the spring.

2. Have a Plan- Power outages are common in the winter months. Have a plan for how you will keep your pipes from freezing if the power goes out. Make sure any alternative heat sources in your home are working well and supplied with fuel. Be ready to let a faucet drip. Add insulation to your pipes.

3. Prepare for Your Home for Vacation- If you are planning to leave your home for more than a day, shut off your water. This will ensure that, if a pipe does break, your home will not experience flooding.

4. Heating- To prevent all of the problems that can arise from frozen pipes, be sure to maintain a temperature of 50 degrees Fahrenheit or greater at all times. It is also important to remember that your crawl space is part of your home, and dips below fifty degrees there can also cause pipes to freeze. It may be worthwhile to check the insulation of your crawl space.

5. Use a Camera- Have a camera inspection performed on your sewer line before winter. Make sure your sewer line has not settled; if it's holding water, it will freeze. Give us a call today to schedule your sewer line camera inspection, and we'll give you a $15 discount for mentioning this blog.
